The monument is said to have originated from a suggestion made by the Liberal MP for Merioneth in the late nineteenth century, Thomas Ellis, whilst he was staying in the locality. The monument was unveiled by Ellis in 1899. The origin of the girl remains unclear with different stories recounting that she was from the village or that she belonged to a wealthy local family or that she represents Wales mourning past glories.
