Munnings' 'ford' series was inspired by the work of the German painter, sculptor and anatomist Heinrich von Zugel (1850–1941). Munnings bought three of Zugel's anatomical casts and would 'often set the cast of the horse out in the sun near...when...painting a horse in action.' Still building on what he had learned at art school, Munnings' absolute knowledge of the anatomy of the horse enabled him to create the sense of forward movement in the modelling of the ponies in his work. Although not in the lead the focal point of the painting is the white horse, Argereau who with the lead ponies virtually comes forward out of the picture plane towards the viewer. Behind these, the string of ponies leads the eye back across the ford to the rear of the group and adds to the sense of movement towards the viewer.
