Baron studied at the Barnstaple School of Art. He worked as a modeller and later for the local Brannam Pottery, which was commissioned to make an earthenware figure to be placed near the entrance of a new sports ground at the end of Rock Park. This figure – to represent sport – was locally named 'Discobolus, the quoit player'. It was modelled by Baron and based on the antique figure then known as 'The Fighting Gladiator' (now called 'The Borghese Gladiator'). Examples designed by William Baron at Brannam Pottery can be seen in the Museum of Barnstaple & North Devon.
