This painting depicts the moment when American and Russian Forces met at the end of the Second World War at the River Eibe, and very briefly celebrated the end of hostilities. The artist could see that, although this meeting meant the end of the War, there was little genuine friendship between the two sides, who were soon after to become bitter enemies for many years. Evidently, Koppel didn't like this work as it was covered over by the work 'Liverpool Pier Head' (still in the Collection) for many years.
