An abstract metal sculpture, painted black, featuring three figures standing behind one another, each successively larger than that in front. The two foremost figures have their 'arms' outstretched. 'The Family' was commissioned by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council in conjunction with MAB (UK) Ltd, the firm responsible for developing the Arcades shopping centre, to provide a focal point in a pedestrianised area by the town's market hall. As 1994 was the Year of the Family this was chosen as the theme for the work. Paul Margetts, who had recently completed a sculpture in the new Radcliffe Freedom Gardens, identified the 'area's hospitality and the strong sense of family' as the inspiration for the work. The octagonal brick base echoes the plinth.
