Melville was influenced by the plein air practices of Jules Bastien-Lepage, who had a wide impact on British painting before 1900. This oil painting of a peasant girl is typical of the subjects painted by the artists working out of doors at Grez-sur-Loing. It has a grey tonality and the freely painted stalks catch the light as they lie scattered on the ground.
