The first three festoons from the left represent Asia. In the centre of the first is a camel’s head with exotic fruits and bound boxes. The first head is of a turbaned and moustachioed figure with fruits, bales of cloth and more distinctive bound boxes. Next is the head of a lion or leopard, with rolls of cloth and various fruits. The next two festoons represent Europe. Europe herself has a headdress that could represent a market house or a temple of learning. On her festoon are books, a crown and flags, a globe and an artist’s palette. Next is a horse with shells and spilling fruits. In the centre bay beneath the pediment is the head of Britannia with a compass, pick axe and sledge hammer, some strange bricks, perhaps, and presumably other significant objects of trade and manufacture.
