An alternative title for this painting is 'The Pitt', East Indiaman, shown in three positions off Dover after her returning from China in 1786'. However the vessel's first voyage for the company to China began in March 1786 and ended in August 1787. It is therefore likely that the painting either depicts the arrival of the vessel in the Downs in 1787, after the voyage to China, or shows the 'Pitt' before the voyage in 1786. The 775-ton vessel, under the husbandmanship of George MacMacauley, made two trips to the East for the Company, the second being between 1788 and 1790.
