A faithful reproduction of the Doge's Palace as it stands on the Grand Canal in Venice. In the painting, we can see the Doge, the head of the Republic, on his balcony looking down at the seamen working on barges and gondolas below. The seamen are from several different countries.

The palace date's from the beginning of the fifteenth century. Venice was at the height of her power then. The grandness of the palace reflects how the Republic envisioned itself. Beside the palace is the Biblioteca Marciana. This was built in the sixteenth century by the Venetian sculptor, Jacopo Sansovino. Venice was a seaport connecting the East to the West for trade so it had a multicultural population.
