This work is a copy of part of the large fresco by Cope executed for the new Houses of Parliament building and finished in 1854.

The subject is from Byron's epic poem 'Lara'; the eponymous knight is dying in the arms of his faithful page Kaled, actually a young woman in disguise. Originally called the Poets' Hall, the room the fresco decorates is now called the Upper Waiting Hall.
