English painter, book illustrator, writer, photographer, and designer. Paul Nash was one of the most individual British artists of his period, taking a distinguished place in the English tradition of deep attachment to the countryside whilst at the same time responding imaginatively to European modernism. Thanks to Art Detective, the location of this artwork has become known. This painting is the corner of the Upper Icknield Way at its junction with Peter’s Lane in Whiteleaf Buckinghamshire. Originally this was an entrance for the general public visiting the horticultural show that was held in the grounds each year. However, that was cut short by the First World War that eventually saw the pleasure gardens fall into a state of disrepair. Owned by Neil Reid between 1984 and 1989, the home was dilapidated, and the gardens were overgrown at the time of purchase.
The family had been unaware of the sheer volume of work undertaken by both John and Paul Nash in capturing some of the breathtaking views. Interestingly, none of their work looks outwards into the Vale of Aylesbury, which is notable as the view is on record as having been the finest in Southeast England at the time they were painting and cutting.
