Signed in the bottom left-hand corner by Edwin Long. Signed in the bottom right-hand corner by George H. Every. The original painting, which is in this collection, was of a pair with Long's 'The Search for Beauty,' also featuring the artist Zeuxis and beautiful women. They are both from 1885 and were commissioned by the art dealer and print publisher Fairless & Beeforth. Both paintings were engraved and the prints published by Fairless & Beeforth.
