Painting of the meeting of the Central Executive Cotton Famine Relief Committee, Manchester. Painted in monochrome with touches of crimson, in an oak frame with appleid plaster mouldings of pendant and overlapping foliage. The work is fitted with a plaque. According to correspondence in the Kenneth Spencer Research Library, University of Kansas at Lawrence, McLachlan was the original photographer and commissioner of the work. Lachlan McLachlan made a photograph of the group with the intent of hiring an artist to produce a large monochrome painting. He then engaged Frederic James Shields as designer, and in August 1868 Shields wrote to Ford Madox Brown asking for advice. Brown recommended Arthur Hughes as the artist, and despite the fact that Hughes wasn't keen to undertake the commission ('I am at so many charges .
