This painting has been on loan to the National Maritime Museum from the Greenwich Hospital Collection since 23 April 1936. It was presented to the hospital in 1824 by the Hon. Barrington Schute, Bishop of Durham.

The provenance of this painting has been proven for the period 1933–1945. It was investigated as part of the Spoliation Project conducted by Jane Holmes (NMM Loans Manager) in 2000/2001.
