Maxwell’s representation of a bull includes influences and trademarks of his oeuvre; unnatural relationships of scale and strong unrefined colour reference symbolism, naïve art and the work of Paul Klee. Maxwell built up layers of paint with brush and knife, here giving 'The Bull' a fantastical and fearsome presence. While visiting Spain in 1928 Maxwell may have encountered such a beast during a bullfighting event.
