Shortly after the First World War, Gertler decided to paint only from life. He had previously produced heavily stylised paintings with a hard-edged angularity. The more rounded forms of this portrait show the influence of Renoir, although the flattened perspective of the table and the geometric shapes of the cushions give this portrait an uncomfortable, claustrophobic quality.
