A cabinet-size version of a gallery picture. One version exists in the Accademia, Venice, and another was advertised in Arte figurativa, vol. 5, 1956, as the property of Galleria Quaglino (photograph in the Witt Library). There is also an etching of the composition which might have served as the model. The mother giving birth is traditionally identified as Rachel, wife of Jacob (Israel). She bore two sons, Joseph and Benjamin (Genesis ch.35 v.24). She died in giving birth to Benjamin (Genesis ch.35 v.19). She was buried on the way to Bethlehem and Jacob set up a pillar at her grave.
