Two aqueducts, one placed behind the other, in the background. In the foreground, a man sits on the edge of a low plinth that has a large urn filled with flowers placed on top. He is wearing Elizabethan-style garments such as short breeches, ruff, flat, round, fabric cap and short fur cloak. He has a short, pointy beard and small moustache. With a long stick in his hand, he is drawing circles into the soil in front of him. A dog lies curled-up and asleep next to him on the right. A young woman wearing a long, dress and a hairband (Alice band?) in her long, loose, fair hair, sits on the ground to his right. She has her legs crossed in front of her and looks intently at the man with one hand raised to her cheek. Tenniel\'s initials are at the lower right margin.
