In this sketch, Mengs adapted a composition first used for the altarpiece he painted for the Colegiata of Castrogeriz near Burgos in 1767. The preliminary sketch for the Burgos painting is now in the Hermitage, St Petersburg (see Roettgen 1999, cat. nos 5 and 7). This sketch seems to have been for a second altarpiece of almost identical design, but not as wide, which remained in his studio at his death and is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (Roettgen 1999, cat. no. 10).
