Hector Horeau was an architect and travelled extensively around Europe for the first part of his life. He also visited Egypt in 1838, travelling through the entire country, including Nubia, and produced many watercolours and sketches. Horeau painted this scene when he stopped at the site, including the boat (dahabeah) hired for his Nile journey. The French Tricolour raised at the boat's stern signalled Horeau's nationality to other travellers on the river.
