View of the two rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel, on the left is the Great Temple of Ramesses II with its four seated colossi of the King, and on the right is the smaller temple of his Queen, Nefertari, with six standing figures of the King and Queen set in recesses.
Hector Horeau was an architect and travelled extensively around Europe for the first part of his life. He also visited Egypt in 1838, travelling through the entire country, including Nubia, and produced many watercolours and sketches. Horeau painted this scene when he stopped at the site, including the boat (dahabeah) hired for his Nile journey. The French Tricolour raised at the boat's stern signalled Horeau's nationality to other travellers on the river.
