Jamaican-born sculptor Ronald Moody produced this unusually sombre view of the comedy actor Terry-Thomas. The trademark 'cad' persona and front-tooth gap are absent. Moody’s wife, Helene, had been Terry-Thomas's friend and personal assistant since 1946. Because of the informal nature of their relationship, the artist had ample opportunity to observe the man himself rather than the on-screen character he was famous for. This is a rare portrait of a friend rather than of a celebrity.
