Published in two illustrated volumes, the 'Tableau Général' was written by Ignace Mouradgea d'Ohsson, a Swedish diplomat of Armenian descent living in Istanbul. The first volume examines Ottoman religious practices, whilst the second deals with the Ottoman state. Amongst the most impressive engravings from volume II are a panoramic view of Mecca and a depiction of the Hajj caravan (the surreh emineh) departing Istanbul for Mecca.
