The memorial commemorates the crew of RAF Coastal Command N/461 which, returning to base after an epic battle over the Bay of Biscay on 2nd June 1943, had to ditch their Short Sunderland bomber in the sea at Praa Sands having being shot at by eight German fighter planes. Local people took the crew into their homes offering them medical attention, however sadly one of the crew, Ted Miles, was killed. The memorial stone has the emblem for the Royal Australian Air Force RAFF and a picture of the Sunderland Flying Boat at the top.
