Colourful and striking murals depicting mostly natural historical and environmental themes cover both the inside and entrances of the two underpasses. The first is divided into geometric shapes with heavy black outlines filled with pattern, scenes, and words; the second a more continuous landscape flowing from meadow flowers, coastline to underwater seascapes. Featherstone worked with local community groups and schools to develop the concept, together settling on the theme of 'local biodiversity' and particularly focusing on 'mini-beasts'. With the closure of all the heavy industries in the area wildlife has begun to re-establish itself once again in the valleys and former coalfields, becoming a valued aspect of the local environment and economy.
