This painting is a view of Lews Castle from Bayhead across the inner harbour from around the 1870s. Sir James Matheson built Lews Castle on the site of the old Seaforth Lodge, following his purchase of the island in 1844 from the Seaforth Mackenzies, and developed the elaborate gardens surrounding the castle.
