The artist is known for oil and watercolours of landscapes and has moved between realism and abstraction. He has been described as having a classical sense of composition but 'northern' in his inspiration, sense of atmosphere and treatment. He is very fond of the valleys of the North and South Esk. He has also concentrated on large rectangular works, often with a wide expanse of sea and sand or, as in this case, open fields.
