Kennedy was one of the Glasgow School of painters. He was drawn to the rural art colony of Cambuskenneth and Craigmill as the area offered a picturesque setting for studies of rural life.
In the 1880s, Cambuskenneth was reachable only by ferry across the River Forth and the village was characterised by orchards, abbey ruins, farm buildings and riverside views of the old town of Stirling.
