After painting a number of barn interiors in the early 1640s, Kalf devoted himself to painting luxury still-life compositions, filled with precious objects which he rendered with a notable sense of light and texture. The silver dish and knife with a cornelian handle, the watch, standing cup and cover, oriental rug, Wan-li porcelain bowl and various glasses are placed in the dark and lit with romantic and varied effects of light. As several of these items are found in paintings of the early 1660s, it is supposed that this composition is of the same date.
