The artist visited Italy for the first time in 1950. Thereafter he travelled regularly and the Mediterranean light and colour greatly influenced his work. This painting is a beautiful example of the kind of paintings that were created using sketches that had been done on the spot. The Isoletta of Basiluzzo is a rocky islet off the island of Panarea, just to the west of the Strait of Messina. In the painting it stands out on the horizon, golden in the sun against the blue of the sea. The mainland of Italy is a hazy line beyond. But these details only locate the painting. Its main subject is the sunlight on the brilliant colours of the flowers, the fruit and the cut melon as they glow in the sunshine against the pink and white table cloth and the dazzling light on the sea behind them.
