Mary Fedden still works from her Hammersmith Wharf Home and studio where she has been since 1949. W. H. Auden, an early visitor to the Wharf, called it, ‘a cave of making, and a habitat for art’. This is an apt description as Fedden has surrounded herself with interesting objects to use in her art.

This painting represents the early part of Mary Fedden’s career where equal importance is placed on the paint marks and the subject. The colours are comparatively subdued compared to Fedden’s later vibrant works.
