Notes

This sculpture of a human figure has no defining features to indicate gender or age. Instead, the anonymous ‘everyman’ figure has been wrapped in a Manx flag, giving the impression of a bound mummy or a shrouded body. The figure is encased within a steel cage similar to a sarcophagus. The figure and its title are ambiguous – does it represent a Manx national, or perhaps a cultural identity that is now dead? Or does it represent an identity standing proud and protected, an impervious figure resistant to change? The figure is life-sized and is intended to be viewed face-to-face and at close quarters, which increases its dramatic effect. The sculpture is placed directly onto the ground and is not exhibited on a plinth. A plinth may be considered to ‘distance’ the work and disrupt the viewer’s engagement.
