Displayed in the Dining Room, the painting captures 'Rhouma' in all her magnificence at the 1896 Cowes Regatta. Built in 1893 and called 'Maria', the 670 ton, twin-screw yacht was purchased in 1895 by George Bullough and renamed 'Rhouma'. Two hundred and twenty-one feet in length, requiring a crew of 40, she carried a full set of sails, but was principally steam driven. Within two months of the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War on 11 October 1899, George Bullough converted 'Rhouma' into a hospital ship by erecting a framed, 20 bed canvas deck-house on the aft-deck, hiring nurses and doctors and sailing his yacht with a number of recruits to Table Bay, Cape Town. 'Rhouma' remained on station for almost 12 months, treating 216 men and 46 officers, before returning to the island of Rum with a number of convalescents on board, the first guests at an almost finished Kinloch Castle.
