The work is part of a commission on the Stephenson Way (Easington Lane to The River Wear). There were originally five boulders, the four remaining ones are aligned from the river to an area of trees. The fifth stone, with an inscription, is now missing. Each stone has a vertical groove cut up one side, over the top and down the other side, which are meant to represent a long-worked-out coal seam.
