Probably painted c1516–1518, this painting was part of the predella of an altarpiece for the church of Santo Spirito, Florence, where the central image was a wooden statue of St Nicholas after a design by Jacopo Sansovino. The other predella panels show the 'Canonization of St Nicholas', 'Two Miracles of the Saint' and 'The Funeral of the Saint'. St Nicholas of Tolentino (c.1245–1306), an Augustinian friar, was canonised in 1446.
