St Francis received the stigmata, or the wounds of the Passion of Christ, in 1224. Variations on the subject became popular in the Counter-Reformation period and this painting illustrates a moment when the agonised saint was consoled by angelic music. For a long time thought to be by Ludovico Carracci or Giovanni Lanfranco, this painting with its attractive nocturnal landscape dates from c.1610–1613.
