A passage in an information leaflet produced by the Museum Service in the 1980s refers to this artwork as a painting of Colonel G. O. Spence's father, Henry Grant Spence. Given the age the man appears to be in the painting it seems more likely that it is Henry Grant Spence, as Gilbert Ormerod Spence died in an accident aged only 47.
