A winged figure of Victory holding a downturned sword in her left hand, a laurel crown in her outstretched right hand and a scabbard at her side, surmounting a hexagonal ashlar obelisk sitting on a double hexagonal base. Since 1978 her wings have been made of fibreglass. A lion's head is attached to the north face of the obelisk. A twice-life-sized, semi-naked figure of Northumbria holding an unfurled military standard with a crown on top in her left hand, leans against the side of the lower base of the obelisk. She holds a fragment of a laurel crown in the palm of her upstretched right hand. Attached to each of the other faces of the obelisk are panels with shields bearing the names of the dead. These are linked by garlands of oak and laurel leaves.
