'Small Red Square with Green and Yellow' is composed of an arrangement of coloured, irregular rectilinear forms. The layering and proximity of these oblong forms create an illusion of depth through their tonal and chromatic interrelationships. This is further emphasised through the varied paint densities Heron uses.

Heron was instrumental in introducing American Abstract Expressionism to Britain and was a friend of the influential critic Clement Greenberg.
