In 1768 George III approved the Instrument of the Foundation of the Royal Academy, which had the aims of training students in fine art and holding annual art exhibitions. In 1771 the King made available rooms in Somerset House for the new institution. The establishment of the prestigious academy is commemorated in one of Zoffany's most remarkable conversation pieces, 'The Academicians of the Royal Academy' (held in the Royal Collection). Here, the academicians are animatedly discussing the merits of a painting which has been submitted for exhibition. According to its inscription, Zoffany painted this sketch in 1807, but the attribution is now doubted.
