This painting, together with 'The Battle of Hyderabad, 24 March 1843' by the same artist, relate to an episode in the history of the Cheshire Regiment which is to this day remembered with pride. During the Scinde campaign the 22nd Regiment was commanded by General Sir Charles Napier, he feature prominently in both paintings and a further large portrait of the General hangs within the same gallery. It is thought that Sir Charles personally supervised the detail of both works. Meeanee was the first of Jones’s Scinde paintings, in a letter to William Napier, the brother of Sir Charles he explains the purpose of the painting was to ‘...do anything in my power to contribute to the honour and commemoration of your glorious brother’. The 22nd Regiment can be seen in the melee at the front of painting.
