Folding fan, the guards richly carved with neo-renaissance ornaments, the sticks partly fretted and painted en grisaille (in shades of grey) with groups of figures representing Love and Marriage. The leaf is painted on the recto with three winter-themed scenes, the principal one being a 16th-century skating party. The surrounding parts of the leaf are painted gold and further enhanced with stylised borders and Classical grotesques.

Renowned for his romanticised, detail-rich historical paintings, Moreau decorated both the leaves and, more unusually, montures (the term used to describe the sticks and guards) of top quality fans for Maison Alexandre and other prestigious fan makers of the period.
