Physician to Guy’s hospital 1945–1963 / Dean of Guy's Medical and Dental Schools 1945–1965. At the age of 17, Edward Rowan Boland went to Guy's Hospital as a medical student but after a few months volunteered for service in the first world war where he was severely wounded and lost an eye. He was invalided out. He resumed his studies and qualified in 1923. He also served in the second world war as consulting physician to Allied Force Headquarters, North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Greece. He returned to clinical work at Guy's working notably in respiratory diseases. He was knighted in 1964.
