Robert Peel was the founder of the modern police force, Prime Minister between 1841 and 1846 and was appointed to the Royal Commission for the Great Exhibition established in January 1850. He also approved the choice of Hyde Park for the Exhibition. The statuette lacks a plinth and was originally designed to lean against a table covered by a cloth which had books and leaflets on it. The right hand would have rested upon this. The figure appears in the 1877 Coalbrookdale Company catalogue (No. 172).
