Blanche moved from Paris to London in 1903, taking a studio in William Street, in Knightsbridge where this portrait was probably painted. Blanche had been a friend of Max Beerbohm (1872–1956), at least since the mid-1890s, when they frequented the colony of writers and artists in Dieppe. Beerbohm is posed as an Oxford student with the arms of the University on upper right and a boater on his knees. By the date of this portrait he had already made his reputation as an essayist and humourist.
