Sir Lancelot Keay (1883–1974) was the first president (1946–1948) to come from that new kind of professional, the local authority salaried architect. He spent his entire life in the public sector. At Birmingham, he was responsible for the erection of 16,000 new homes (1921–1925). He then moved to Liverpool as Director of Housing before becoming Liverpool’s City Architect in 1938. He was a traditionalist, believing in ‘fine building’ rather than visions of glass and steel. Keay is little remembered for his work but few architects can claim to be responsible for building 30,000 homes.
