Sir John Russell Reynolds (1828–1896), Bt, is best known for his early writings on nervous diseases. He was one of the first to suggest the possibilities of using electricity as a therapeutic agent. He was a brilliant scholar, and graduated from University College, London, with gold medals in physiology, comparative anatomy and medicine. He worked as assistant physician to the Hospital for Sick Children, Westminster Hospital, and University College Hospital, and full physician and Holme professor of clinical medicine at University College. He later succeeded Sir William Jenner in the chair of medicine. Reynolds also held several offices at the Royal College of Physicians, including president from 1893 to 1896. He was made physician to the Royal Household in 1879, and later created a baronet.
