Sir John Chardin (1643–1713) was born in Paris but settled in England as a Huguenot refugee. He was a jewel merchant who travelled extensively in Persia and India, 1664–1670 and 1671–1677. His published voyages contain valuable information on the history and customs of Islam. He was appointed court jeweller and knighted in 1681 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1682. In this portrait he is seen pointing to a map of Persia.
