The sitter was knighted in 1634 and is seen here at the age of 54 (according to its inscription), a year before he died. He was the Attorney-General and Chief Justice of the Common Pleas between 1640–1641. He purchased the Kingston estate in 1632–1636 and Corfe Castle estate in 1635, where he lived.

This work was painted by Gilbert Jackson in the same year as his father's portrait, also at Kingston Lacy. This is a reduced version of the three-quarter-length portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, which was presented by Walter Ralph Bankes in 1896.
