Sir Edward Ward of Stoke Doyle was Attorney General and then Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer. Though the precise connection of Ward to Deal remains elusive, his father-in-law, Thomas Papillon, was MP for Dover, 1673–1681 and 1689–1695.
